About

Soundscapes consists of sound works that will be played via an outdoor stereo system in the breezway space at the Canopy Complex (916 Springdale Road), from 5pm - 7am each day. Each month ICOSA will feature a new sound artist, curated from local and national artist submissions. Each monthly featured artist’s work will be played on a loop and will be accessible to the public free of charge. Artist Statement

33 in Three Thirds by Doug Fogelson

Using the Boss RC Loop Station's 99 recordable tracks over the period of about a year, I played around with various instruments running through effects pedals. These casual exercises provided a way to discover things about my own state of mind/process when heard as arranged using the methodology below.

On track one I added the first 33 layers in a linear fashion starting from 1-33 and from left to right in elongated "stair-stepping" stacks across a timeline in the audio post-production virtual space of Logic. I did this without listening– just to find random/chance overlaps, the only adjustments made were tweaking the track volume and left/right/stereo adjustments. All the fun stuff is coming from the pedals during the original recordings.

On track 2 I used a non-linear stacking method along the same length timeline, just kind of mashing up tracks 34-66 (which weren't made in a pure linear sequence to begin with). Again, only the volume and fade in/out were adjusted and assigned to stereo or left/right in the mix. Feeling the chance overlaps that resulted reminded me of William Burroughs "cut ups" and John Cage's "chance-controlled music", both of whom were strong influences on me as a student and still are to this day. Track 3 is made like Track 1 however going backwards from 99-67 (even though there is no real formal "backwards"). Hearing unlikely harmonies, happenstances, and the overall sounds as they come together in the “music of chance” feels oddly like a bit of my subconscious was expressed from various moods over the timeframes of the original recordings.
