Window Dressing XLVII: Charlie Mura
Window Dressing XLVII Charlie Mura: Timshel
Exhibition Dates: August 4th–10th, 2025 (visible 24 hours/day)
Artist Reception: Friday, August 8th, 7-9pm
Charlie Mura creates figurative oil paintings of large groups of people that reflect on the range of scenes that occur in a crowded and cluttered society devoid of personal connection. These works explore the theatre of everyday life as personal identity blends into a mass of character archetypes. Dynamic and disjunctive brushstrokes and bright, acidic colors allude to advertising, screens, and artificial light, enhancing the dramatization of tense moments. To create his compositions, Mura uses elements of collage to stitch together a personal archive of digital photos and found imagery. Drawing upon art historical narratives with a focus on Baroque and Romantic painting, he recontextualizes historical conflicts and attitudes through contemporary reconstruction and image circulation.
